Slavonic-Russian Manuscripts and Books Published in Russia before the 18th Century.Scientific and information library of the National Archives of the Karelian Republic contains 90 Slavonic-Russian manuscripts dd. the 15th-19th centuries; each of them is a unique example of the Russian cultural heritage. This valuable and interesting collection includes different old-belief and divine-service books, gospels and other rare manuscripts. Among the books one can mark out “Apostle” dd.1552. This is a book recopied by a Novgorod scribe deacon Stefanko. It is written in a special way called “poluustav” – one of the methods of Slavonic script when cursive letters are added to block letters. It has a leather book-cover with an iron lock that is in working condition even today. There is a note on a title-page dd. the 19th century that “Apostle” belongs to Epiphany Church of the Povenets district. Later the manuscript belonged to a province church-archaeological museum. “Apostle” is an ancient divine-service book where the text is divided into chapters that are read aloud in the temple during liturgy (from Greek – it means a divine service, a mass – the main Christian religious service when communion is received). “Apostle” was the first book published in Russia in the Ivan Fedorov printing-house in 1564. There are two printed editions of “Apostle” dd. 1683 and 1653 in the library of the National Archives. They were published in Moscow. One of the earliest books kept in the Archives is “Zlatoust” (“Silver-tongued Orator”) – a manuscript book of the end of the 15th – the beginning of the 16th centuries – a letter-poluustav. It has a book-cover and contains St. Joann Zlatoust’s monologues, conversations and lectures. Besides, in the library there are some gospels, divine- service collections and songbooks of the Russian Orthodoxy – the so-called “Obihod” – which contain psalms of divine services. There is, for example, “Obihod Krukovoy (“kruk” means “hook”)” dd. the end of the 17th century among them – a letter- poluustav in a cover where psalms are recorded by means of “hooks” – signs used when recording psalms. There are the following books among manuscripts and the books printed before the 18th century: “Hagiography of Saint Alexander Svirsky” – a manuscript dd. the 18th century, “Hagiography of Saint Yefrem Sirin” – a manuscript dd. the 18th century, a Collection dd. the last quarter of the 17th century that contains hagiography of Saint Philip, metropolitan Moskovsky and German Solovetsky. In general, the collection of Slavonic-Russian manuscripts and books printed in Russia before the 18th century presents a priceless Russian cultural heritage carefully kept in the fund of the National Archives of the Karelian Republic. |
